Video Journalism - Can any teenager do it now?

I have recently had a chance to check out what will likely be the next generation of Video Journalists.  Sitting in a room full of brand new Macs at the University of Salford, I watched the students at work.
What was almost frightening was that so many of them found their way around Final Cut as if they had been using it for a decade. What is more, they were using creative techniques that would leave many current professionals bewildered.

The main advantages of video journalism

If you have worked as a video journalist it is almost inevitable that you will face a certain amount of criticism.   The question often arises, "isn't it always better to send a reporter and a camera operator instead of a vj?".
I am not so dogmatic that I believe conventional working has no place and video journalism is always best, but I do think it is highly under-rated.

Why IPTV will be a Video Journalist's Best Friend

When people ask what attracted me to Video Journalism I do not immediately think of the joys of carrying heavy equipment, working long days or even watching the Final Cut Pro "spinning ball of death" as my edit freezes.  No, the things that attract me to Video Journalism are two main things:
1. Telling people's stories
2. Freedom to make decisions

Why I created Video Journalist HQ

I often introduce myself to people as a video journalist.  There is one problem. Not many people know what I mean. I have to explain that it is a journalist who films and edits their own stories.  Why is it that when you say "photojournalist "and get a nod of understanding, but say "video journalist" and you are met by blank stares?
